Legislative Action Network
The ASBSD Legislative Action Network is designed to activate the ASBSD membership, bringing those responsible for carrying out the interests of the local education community together with the legislators that represent their district at the state level.
If your board has not designated a LAN representative, e-mail ASBSD Executive Secretary Katie Mitchell-Boe - make sure to include your e-mail address so we can communicate with you in the most timely and efficient manner.
The Role of ASBSD Legislative Action Network Members
Every school board appoints a board member as its ASBSD Legislative Action Network (LAN) member to attend to legislative issues. LAN members and ASBSD staff work to build and maintain a link between state legislators and their local school district.
Up to 105 selected LAN members are also phone tree designees chosen because of their close proximity to an elected representative or senator. These designated LAN members will periodically receive calls from a member of the ASBSD Board or staff asking them to personally contact their legislator(s) and other school board members in their area when quick contact with a legislator is needed.
In order for school board members to influence legislation with grassroots advocacy, ASBSD needs LAN members to make a commitment to the following responsibilities:
- Legislative Action Network Members develop, maintain and nurture constructive dialogue with state and federal policy-makers.
- Legislative Action Network Members facilitate visits by legislators to schools and classrooms in their districts.
- Legislative Action Network Members keep informed about current education issues.
- Legislative Action Network Members are willing to call their legislators at home or at the state capitol within a short period of time, generally within an hour or two of receiving the call from ASBSD staff.
- Legislative Action Network Members are willing and able to provide specific information to legislators from their local district perspective.
- Legislative Action Network Members are willing to advocate issues from a statewide perspective when necessary.
- Legislative Action Network Members provide ASBSD with their contact information (email address [es] and telephone numbers) and be accessible for ASBSD staff to contact them at work or at home when the need arises.
- Legislative Action Network Members inform other board members and community members of the relationship between state and federal policy and public schools.
